Many spyware programs display advertising. Occasionally they show up in pop up ads. This type of spyware can bring up a new pop up every few minutes. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to work and having to stop every few minutes and take a pop up off of the screen. Another type will pop up with an ad for another site; this ad looks desirable to advertisers. Many advertisers purchase ads and placement of those ads when a user visits a site. This is the hook.

There are times when spyware is piggybacking on top of a worm or virus. A few years ago, some miscreants used the spybot worm to put pornographic pop ups on infected user’s systems. The instigator of this one profited from people being directed to the pornographic site. This has a compound result. The user has to deal with the worm and the spyware.
